Touring the whole France

Overtourism

Overtourism is a phenomenon where large groups of tourists are causing congestions, or overcrowding. In France, this often happens in Paris, for example, employees of "Le Louvre" went on a strike over what they said were dangerously overcrowded conditions. This is because Paris welcomes over 30 million tourists each year, making it one of the most visited cities in the world.

'The Joconde' with tons of visitors

Notice how everyone is taking photos and noone is looking directly at it ? One way to fight against this type of problem is simply visiting other things. This phenomenon occurs in most places in Paris, "La tour Eiffel" or "Notre Dame de Paris" are often affected by overcrowding. The Louvre alone receives more than 10 million visitors annually, creating those long queues and crowded galleries. That's why the Guardian prepared a list for you to enjoy of cultural places throughout France.

Our Recommendations

In fact there are cultural places in most regions of France, Paris is the very best in terms of numbers, but quantity isn't always quality.

You could visit the worldwide known wine city : Bordeaux, or some of the most impressive cathedrales of Europe, with the "Cathédrale de Rouen" or the pitch black "Cathédrale de Clermont". And even the "Alignements de Carnac" which are enormous stones arranged in lines for centuries in Britanny.

There are other places, french regions are divided into "départements" which are each very disctinct with a rich culture in Normandy there are famous beaches and historic WWII sites : omaha, and utah beach.

The "départements" map

France is divided in "départements", each of these have cultural places. Our map will show you the one visit you should do in each, to do so : simply click on the subdivision and the infos will show up.

You can eliminate Paris from the map with the button hide Paris, and you can filter to only have the places with the most visits to do. The one with fewer numbers could be interesting by the beauty of nature too, France has a major diversity in landscapes and territories.

We didn't talk about it, but France has some territories overseas they are great to visit too !
